What is spaying?

Spaying (Ovariohysterectomy) is the surgical removal of a female (queen) cat’s internal reproductive structures including her ovaries, Fallopian tubes, uterine horns and a section of her uterine body

Why the cat spayed? indication?

1. Eliminates unwanted pregnancies/kittens
2. Decreases chance of mammary and uterine tumors
3. Eliminates heat cycles
4. Eliminates roaming and behavioral issues
5. Ability to abort pregnancy if needed or wanted
6. cats with diabetes or epilepsy should be spayed to prevent hormonal changes that may interfere with medications.

Docking is the removal of portions of an animal’s tail. While docking and bobbing are more commonly used to refer to removal of the tail, the term cropping is used in reference to the ears. Tail docking occurs in one of two ways.

Indication

1. For fattening the animal
2. For make easy mating
3. For decrease anal contamination
4. Necrosis of tail
5. For cosmetic purpose as in dog

Procedure

1. Clipped and shaved the surgical area
2. Ring block local anesthesia at site of operation in ruminants & general anesthesia in dog
3. Tourniquet the tail above the site of operation to reduce blood supply
4. Make 2 “U” shape incisions above the articulation of 2 vertebrae (site of operation)
5. Blunt dissection (skining)
6. Cut the articulation with tendon and muscles
7. Suturing the skin with skin by simple interrupted method (silk)
8 . Remove the tourniquet
9. Dripping  with gauss and give systemic antibiotec (PS)

Complications

1. haemorrhage
2. Abscess

Dehorning is the process of removing the fully grown horns of livestock. Cattle, sheep, and goats are sometimes dehorned for economic and safety reasons.

Benefits of Dehorning

• Horns are removed because they can pose a risk to humans, other animals and to the bearers of the horns themselves (horns are sometimes caught in fences or prevent feeding
• Increased space at the feedbunk
• ease of transport, both through a facililty and during shipping
• decreased trauma by caused by dominant and aggressive animals
• decreased risk of injury to personnel

NOTE 1:- Dehorning is normally performed with local anesthesia and sedation,dehorning is not routinely performed, since it is a difficult and painful process for the animal
NOTE 2:- dehorning under the age of 2 weeks is strongly recommended:
1. Technically easier procedure
2. Ease of handling resulting in decreased stress
3. Decreased risk of hemorrhage

Potential Complications

• Hemorrhage
• Pain
• Horn regrowth
• Infection / Sinusiti

Techniques

The mechanism behind dehorning is to permanently destroy or remove the horn-producing cells at the base of the bud, to prevent further growth

2. Disbudding tube/spoon
3. Barnes dehorner/scoop
4. Dehorning paste
